Ingredients

  • Fresh green Peppercorns -2 tablespoon
  • Shallots -10 or small onion – 1
  • Garlic – 6 cloves
  • Tomato -1 medium finely chopped
  • Tamarind -1 small lemon sized ball (soaked in 1/2 cup warm water)
  • Mustard seeds -1 teaspoon
  • Curry leave – 1spring
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder -1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder -1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder -1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper powder -1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt-to taste
  • Sesame oil (gingelly oil)-2 tablespoon
  • Water as needed

How to make patchai milagu kulampu

1.Prepare the tamarind extract

  • Squeeze the soaked tamarind and extract the juice.Discard the pulp.

2.Tempering

  • Heat sesame oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds let them splutter.
  • Add curry leaves followed by chopped shallots and garlic,saute until golden brown.

3.Cooking the base

  • Add chopped tomato and saute until soft.
  • Add turmeric,coriander, and cumin powder.

4.Add tamarind

  • Pour in the tamarind extract and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

5.Final adjustments

  • Add salt to taste and a little black pepper powder if u want extra heat.
  • Let the gravy simmer until thick and aromatic.

Serve

  • Serve hot with steamed ricr,dosa or idli.
